“How am I supposed to accept that!” When you hide the reason why you want to break up, you’re just going to hear him say “Why?” over and over again. Even if it’s difficult to tell him the reason (“I’ve fallen in love with someone else”), you can most likely finalize the breakup more quickly if you give him a clear explanation.
When you lie to him because you don’t want to hurt him, bring up some fault of his that you knew about before you started dating, or dredge up some issue you already resolved during your relationship, all you’ll do is antagonize him. Before you break up, it’s important for both of you to talk heart to heart and listen to each other so you can eventually move on to new relationships.
